If a freezer has failed, leave the door shut. A full, closed freezer holds usable temperature for a surprisingly long time, and the same freezer opened every twenty minutes to check on it does not. What makes things worse is emptying a warm refrigerator and standing the doors open to help it recover: every minute of that hands the evaporator more humid room air, which is exactly what ices it up.
