Why we start there
The usual source is the condenser fan: debris reaches the blade and the balance goes, or the bearing has simply logged more hours than the same fan would log in a cooler town, because a Temecula summer keeps these units working long after a coastal kitchen has let its appliances idle. What gets checked: the condenser fan blade for debris and its bearing for play; anything loose in the grille cavity, which on these units routinely includes packaging, pet hair and a dropped magnet; the compressor mounts; the evaporator fan for ice contact, which makes a fast ticking rather than a rattle; and the drain tray, which buzzes against the compressor housing once it has worked loose. Before you call, listen for whether the noise runs constantly or comes and goes with the cooling cycle. That one observation usually names the part before anybody arrives.
